Woollywotnots' Midweek Inspiration
Home is where you relax and spend time with your families and friends. So it’s important to make sure that the colours in your home are welcoming and make you feel comfortable.
To decide which colour is best for your room, examine your furniture and other accessories, including artwork, that you might have in the room and choose a favourite colour from these items. Visit your painter or decorator to get some co-ordinating colour charts. When you’ve narrowed it down to a few colours, buy a small tin of each colour and test on existing walls.
Most colours appear darker over a large area. So choose a shade or two lighter if you’re painting a large room. If you find the colour in a particular room is too bold, soften it by applying a lighter or more muted colour over the original colour, and using techniques such as colour washing, sponging or rag rolling.
In general, strong, warm colours such as red and orange tend to make a space appear smaller.

White and off-white tends to make the ceiling appear higher, while medium and darker colours will create the illusion of lowering the ceiling. This can be useful if you want to create a cosy feel to a room.

Watch out for ideas from magazines, department stores and homes of family and friends. If you see a colour combination you like, think about how you can use those colours in your home to good effect.
When choosing ornaments and furniture for your home, make sure your purchase will blend in well with the other colours in your home.
If you’re tired of the colours in your home, why not use the service of a professional painter or decorator, who will be able to help you choose the right colours for your home.
Once you have put your heads together and come up with a colour scheme you like, the professional will then be able to work to your specification. Professional decorators also work to the highest standards and are experts in dealing with all the tricky bits (like that section above the stairs). Stripping & hanging wallpaper is notoriously difficult so it’s a relief to have someone else climb the ladder and do the job for you.
So if you’re considering redecorating, don’t just brush off the idea. After all the hard work and effort you will be able to stand back and admire the drastic improvement just a simple lick of paint has made to your room.
