Top 10 Holiday Ideas for you, kids and friends to have fun & keep fit!

Woollywotnots' Move-It Monday

Are you stuck for ways to keep yourself fit and enjoy it? The long summer holidays are nearly upon us! Well some of you may already be enjoying the summer holidays. Woollywotnots Move-It Monday is here for ideas.

How did you all get on last week by the way? I’m only 1 pound down this week, but at least it is in the right direction. I’m going to get myself booked onto a 5k race now for September. The weather will be a little cooler and it is something for me to work towards. It will be a huge huge achievement for me to run a 5k race! At the moment, it would take me 60 minutes to complete.

1. Get involved in outdoor activities.

Summer is the best time for you, friends and kids to learn fun skills like climbing and canoeing – the weather is warm and there are lots of courses available that will teach adventurous sports to those who want to live life on the edge. Make sure that the course you sign up for is recognised by a major outdoors organisation – and that the instructors are trained professionals. Courses like this are fun, good exercise and help kids develop interpersonal skills.

2. Do some charity work.

Voluntary work with the disabled, the elderly or other needy groups can be great experience for you, your friends, your kids and teaches them a little about the lives of people less fortunate than themselves. Not all voluntary work will be open to kids, but there are some special schemes available. Timebank UK runs a project called Energise that’s designed to help youngsters donate their time to specific projects in their local area.

3. Have a sports party.

You know how kids seem to have boundless energy? Why not devote a day to helping them burn it off and at the same grab together a group of friends so you can all burn some calories? Organising a sports party can be great fun – you don’t even need to have a huge garden.  Arrange to meet all your kids’ friends in a local park, or at a sports centre, and organise five-a-side matches and other fun sports. For ideas on a healthy picnic see here. You could see how many skips you could do or how long you can work a hula hoop!

4. Get Building!

If you live near a beach, then why not hold a giant sandcastle building competion. If you’re close to woods, why not build a shelter.

5. Ride into the sunset.

Many youngsters love horses. Teens who want to further their equestrian experience can often do so for free by volunteering to do summer work in a stable. They’ll probably do a lot of mucking out, but they should also get the chance to work very closely with the animals they love. Kids who have an ambition to work with animals should have few problems finding similar work at boarding kennels and catteries.

6. Set up camp.

Kids love camping, especially if they can cook their own food and fend for themselves. There are lots of options available: younger kids can pitch their wilderness camp in the safety of the back garden while older teenagers could go a little further afield. Make sure they have the consent of the landowner and that they know how to pitch a tent properly! You could let them cook for themselves. Get out and about and explore the countryside.

7. Get Walking

If the weather’s good, get walking! Take a camera and feel inspired by all the things you wouldn’t normally notice if you ordinarily take a mode of transport other than your feet!

8. Local Tourist Information Activities

Tap into your local tour guides who will have a whole range of activities for the summer including treasure hunts and guided walks and tours. Explore your local area and learn something new.

9. For the kids – encourage them to join up!

There are lots of clubs and societies that run in the summer holidays. One of the best ways to have fun cheaply is to get your kids to join a youth organisation like the Scouts or Guides. The Scout Association’s various groups run a huge range of summer activities from week-long camps to days out. If your kids think scouting isn’t cool try to encourage them to turn up to at least one event – they’ll soon change their minds! More information on all branches can be found at the Scouts website

10. Outdoor Games in the garden

Get out in the garden and do some gardening or play outdoor games. If you don’t have a garden, head to your local park, forest, beach.

  2. Great ideas, Katharine! I didn’t weigh myself today because I know I didn’t do well last week … ate fast food a couple times and didn’t exercise. I’m back on track this week and took my walk this afternoon. I usually like to take neighborhood walks in the evenings, but this week I’m going to try walking after lunch at work.
